"Innovated higher criticism and statisticians’ networks"
One line of my work that has been significantly influenced by
Professor Hall is my work on Higher Criticism, especially the paper on
Innovated Higher Criticism (Hall and Jin , 2010). This paper studies the
interaction between rare/weak signals and the correlation structure of
the noise, and is connected to recent interests on
Fisher's Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA), precision
matrix estimation, and the graphlet screening idea in
variable selection. I will briefly introduce the idea of
Innovated Higher Criticism, and explains its connection
to the other ideas aforementioned.
Compared to his paramount achievements in theory, Professor Hall's
strong interest in real-world applications and new data types may seem
unfamiliar to many, but it has also influenced me in a significant way,
especially on my work Ji and Jin (2016). In this paper, we have
collected statisticians' coauthorship and citation networks, using papers
published in about 20 statistical journals spanning 30-40 years.
I will introduce some structures we find in this data set, focusing on
Professor Hall's coauthorship and citation networks.
